Words of Wisdom from the Province of Quebec

Words of Wisdom Learned on the Sentier Transcanadien in Quebec

As we journeyed along the Trans Canada Trail over the course of three years through Quebec, the trail shifted - softer in some places, more rugged in others, and always layered with history, language, and culture. Here, more than anywhere else, we found ourselves slowing down to understand not just the words spoken, but the meaning behind them.

While navigating between languages, we were reminded that communication is as much about listening as it is about understanding. From quiet forest trails to the vibrant streets of Quebec’s towns and villages, we encountered people whose perspectives challenged us, whose kindness stayed with us, and whose remarks - sometimes casual, sometimes profound - became echoes in our journals.  In this way, their life experiences and perspectives will stay with us long after we’ve left the region.

As in other provinces, we’ve collected and now share these Words of Wisdom from Quebec, in the hopes that you, too, might hear what we heard: the quiet voice of the trail, the power of perspective, and the reminders to keep walking with open hearts and ears.

1. We all struggle a lot, through personal challenges, and public crises – but if we stick together, we can get through anything

2. Good food and good wine don’t fix everything, but they do help with most things.

3. Language can be a barrier or a bridge—choose to build bridges.

4. You don’t need to speak the same words to understand each other—kindness is always fluent.

5. Pride in French culture and heritage isn’t about looking back—it’s about carrying the best of it forward.

6. In the forest, silence speaks loudest. Learn to listen to what is not said.

7. Whether it’s maple syrup or mountain views, Quebec teaches you to slow down and savour.

8. Maple trees don’t worry about who notices their colour, they just turn anyway.

9. No matter how far you walk, the land will always have more to teach you.

10. Don’t chase the kilometres, chase the moments today that will never come again.

See you on the Trail!
