T - 7 Days and counting...Year 3 on the TCT nears

The weather is warming and the birds are calling…hiking season must be upon us!

It is now T – 7 days until we are again homeless and due to return to our #hike4birds across Canada on The Great Trail – the world’s longest recreational pathway! It has now been 2 years since we sold our house and donated our possessions to pay for this amazing adventure!

Each year brings new challenges. In 2018 on the East Coast Trail we trekked through freak blizzards, snow storms, down pours and the beginning of a tropical storm. In 2019 as we set out onto the Great Trail venturing from Cape Spear Newfoundland through Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and into Quebec we hiked more than 3500 km through +50 degree heat and Hurricane Dorian while seeing more than 250 species of birds and sharing our adventures. In 2020 we endured Covid 19, leaving late and limiting what we could do and how far we could get. Nonetheless we eventually trekked from the nation’s capital of Ottawa Ontario through to Winnipeg Manitoba experiencing masking, social distancing, isolation and provincial quarantine.

What will 2021 bring? Where will it put us on the trail? What wildlife and birds will we find? What challenges will we encounter along the way? We don’t know….so once again we prepare for the unknown, the uncertain, and the exciting! It is all part of the privilege of exploring Canada’s natural places and wild spaces!

We have spent the winter resting ourselves, repairing our gear, and preparing to return to the trail.

There are so many exciting things to announce as we set back out onto our expedition promoting diversity in the outdoors while striving to reconnect youth to nature through citizen science.

The outdoors are calling and soon…very soon…we must go!

See you on the trail (at a socially responsible distance)…

  1. Thanks for your posts. I really appreciate hearing about your adventures and seeing your wonderful photos.

I don't understand the negative comments on social media. That's crazy and weird. It's like watching people do something meaningful that they can't(?) do brings out the worst in them. Sincerely: this is not your problem.

I always wanted to walk or cycle the TCT, but for health reasons that's not going to happen. Watching you do it is pretty great.

    All the best for 2021!
