From the Atlantic to the Pacific "I Hope You've Had the Time of Your Life..."
As you know we are a little behind in publishing our final 7 blogs taking us from Horseshoe Bay on the mainland, along the Salish Sea Marine Trail and across Vancouver Island to both the Western and Pacific Terminus of the Trans Canada Trail. Trust that the are soon to be released. The delays are the result of exhaustion and the current scramble to get plans for 2023 and the Arctic in place!
We also might have a few surprises in store including warming up by hiking new sections of the Great Trail on the East Coast of Canada!
In the coming year we hope to "backtrack" a little to trek sections added to the TCT since we began, as well as getting some of the spurs across the country that we did not venture along completed. However our main goal is to head North toward the Arctic and the Arctic Ocean. So there is lots to get in place and lots to arrange to make the coming year as much of a success as the past our years.
With all of that said however we have completed a small video sharing the highlights from the past 4 years for your enjoyment.
A few interesting facts and numbers for you to think about. Over the course of 4 years of trekking we became two of only a few people to have ever completed the main route of the Trans Canada Trail on foot by hiking from the Atlantic to the Pacific unsupported.
Fewer people have accomplished this
goal than have walked on the moon.
Trans Canada Trail Firsts
In hiking
coast to coast we are the first duo and first couple to trek on
foot across the nation on the Trans Canada Trail.
We are the first to comprehensively blog and document the Great Trail from
the Atlantic to the Pacific providing a detailed guide and map of the national
trail for others to follow in the future for their own exploration of this
amazing country.
I am the first to bird the nation as a conservation
naturalist and educator along the Trans Canada Trail and share more than 1000 species of wildlife including photographing more than 350 species of birds with Canadians.
My trekking companion, Sean Morton is the first to comprehensively photograph and document the TCT and the
Canadian experience along the trail from the Atlantic to the Pacific. In the process we have taken more than 750,000 pictures of Canada and shared more than 100,000
of them on social media.
Finally we are the
first to trek the national pathway for a
cause, dedicated to encouraging Canadians to engage in Citizen Science and
using the TCT to campaign for Bird Conservation, the protection of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas and the Boreal forest, as well as promote youth engagement in their own communities.
The Great Trail by the Numbers
En route we have hiked for 556 days on the Trans Canada Trail, trekked across 1 continent between 2 oceans venturing through 10 provinces, walked 13,716 km unsupported, taken 17,830,800 steps each (for a total of more than 32 Million steps), written more than 800 blog entries, and taken 3/4 of a million photographs which have won awards and been featured in over a dozen publications. We have gone through 3 tents, 10 pairs of shoes each, 5 pairs of sandals each, 3 sets of hiking poles, 4 cameras, and 2 lenses. While I have gotten through with only a few blisters and sore muscles, Sean has broken 2 toes, 2 fingers, and cracked his collar bone - in addition to the usual bruises and bumps along the way. Best of all however we have experienced countless acts of kindness and received tons of random support across the nation which we could never have anticipated while sharing Canada with Canadians.
The North awaits us next!
See you on the trail!
